Cavalier 2014

Today I popped along to the Tunbridge Wells Wargames Society's Cavalier show.  It's not a big show but does attract some well known names in traders and usually has some nice games to see.

Obviously my first call had to be on the Maidstone Wargames Society's new show game - Somewhere in Belgium 1914:

I then had a wander around the rest of the show.  Here are a couple of the other games that caught my eye:

In between I managed some shopping - here's the haul:

As you can see I have started amassing the figures I need for my new 15mm Wars of the Roses project but I also picked up some 28mm French & Indian Wars figures from Redoubt and a 4Ground building from Colonel Bill's.  Along with a useful 4Ground cart I picked up two new sets of rules (although one of them isn't so new, having been published in 1994!) - Sepoy for my Indian Mutiny project and Donnybrook - for which I entirely blame Ray!  I suspect Donnybrook may lead to some re-prioritising of projects for this year...

WSS: Athlone Cavalry Regiment

The final Dutch cavalry unit is a squadron of the Earl of Athlone's Cavalry Regiment:

WSS: Aughrim Cavalry Regiment

The second unit of Dutch cavalry is a squadron of the Baron of Aughrim's Cavalry Regiment:

The Mutiny: A Flag for the 32nd

Having a little break from basing 15mm War of the Spanish Succession figures, I decided to add a flag to the 32nd (Cornwall) Regiment of Foot I have for the Indian Mutiny:

You will have seen the figures before (they're from Mutineer Miniatures) and I based them up all the way back in May 2011 and (for the eagle eyed) technically, the flag isn't quite correct but I think it works.

WSS: Régiment des Dragons du Baron d'Asfeld

The next addition to my War of the Spanish Succession project is another French unit - a squadron of the Baron d'Asfeld's regiment of dragoons:

WSS: (Dutch) Brandenburg Regiment

The final addition to my Dutch infantry for this phase is some Brandenburg foot:

You may have already guessed that the figures are from Black Hat and the flag from Warflag.

You may also have noticed the lack of additional info around these last units.  This is a combination of there being less info around and also that I did the pictures before going into hospital last week for a minor op and so have not had a chance to follow it up much (so these have been a bit of Blue Peter's "here's some I prepared earlier") or to progress any of the other units that I have on the bench.  So you will be seeing a brief hiatus as I am not getting back up to speed quite as quickly as I had (rather optimistically) thought I might.

WSS: Dutch Regiment Beynheim

My next addition to the War of the Spanish Succession a Dutch is the Beynheim (other spellings are available!) regiment:

WSS: Dutch Guards

I thought my Allied army for my War of the Spanish Succession project was rather too British and lack some allies - so my next additions have a Dutch theme.  First the No. 4 Guards:

WSS: Régiment Dauphin - Cavalerie

Clearly my French forces needed some cavalry support so the next addition to the project is a squadron of French horse from the Régiment Dauphin - Cavalerie.

WSS: Dorrington's Regiment

The second Jacobite Irish unit I am adding to my French troops is William Dorrington's Regiment which was created from the former 1st and 2nd Battalions of King James' Royal Irish Foot Guards.  They fought alongside Clare's Regiment at the Battle of Blenheim and in a number of other engagements including the Battle of Malplaquet.

As usual the figures are from Black Hat but this time the flag is from Maverick Models.

To supplement my French foot I am starting to add some troops in their pay.  In this case it's the first of my Jacobite Irish regiments which formed part of the Irish Brigade originally sent to France in 1690 by King James II in return for French troops and which remained in French service until 1792.

The first unit of Irish is Viscount Clare's Regiment who fought at the Battle of Blenheim as part of the Marquis de Rosel's Corps near Oberglau and also at the Battle of Ramillies where Lord Clare was mortally wounded.

Once again Black Hat figures with a flag from Warflag.

Chain of Command - At The Sharp End

Too Fat Lardies have just released a campaign supplement for their Chain of Command rules called At The Sharp End and so I had to pick up a copy to add to my collection.

At The Sharp End is 47 pages in the same style as the Chain of Command Rules but is only available as a standard PDF from the Lardies website.

After a brief introduction the book is split into four sections.  The explains their approach to campaigns and then suggests three different types that you can use (No map, simple map, full map).  The second section provides the rules for conducting the campaign itself.  The third section provides rules for creating the characters involved and the final section provides guidance on how to build a campaign.

Everything seems pretty well laid out and, as with a lot of the Lardies stuff, it looks like it will be a good read whether you actually end up using it for an actual campaign.

WSS: Régiment de Bourbonnais

The final actual French regiment for this phase of the project is the Régiment de Bourbonnais.  Raised in 1597 the regiment was dismissed and then reinstated a couple of times at the beginning of the 17th Century.  During the War of the Spanish Succession, it fought at the Battles of Friedlingen, Blenheim, Oudenarde and Malplaquet.

Once again the flag is from Warflag and the figures are from Black Hat.

WSS: Régiment de Saintonge

The next addition to my War of the Spanish Succession French army is the Régiment de Saintonge.  Originally raised in 1684 it fought as part of the Marquis de Bligny's brigade (along with the Régiment de Champagne) in Oberglau during the Battle of Blenheim.

The figures are Black Hat and the flag is from Warflag.
